The Beauty of Music Series
19th Century Instrumental Music

Thursday, May 20 (7:30 - 9:30 pm)

Nineteenth century music is often referred to as ‘romantic’ - a rich and many-layered description.

This session will focus on a selection of major topics in the history of instrumental music in the nineteenth century. Emphasis will be on the interrelatedness of romantic music with literature, painting, and the social conditions that supported the arts of the time.

Participants will listen to recordings by Berlioz, Chopin, Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky and undertake guided discussions concerning their own experiences when they listen to the music.

Facilitated by Dr. Lynn Cavanagh

Lynn has taught music history and theory for over twenty years. An active church musician, she holds a PhD in music theory and is currently an assistant professor of music at the University of Regina.
