Thursday, October
7 (7:30 - 9:30 p.m.)
One of the most significant texts is not, strictly speaking, a work of
English Literature at all: it is the English Bible.
In the past 500 years, writers have repeatedly turned to the subject matter,
phrasing, vocabulary and imagery of the Bible for inspiration for their
own work.
This session will explore how the Bible as both a literary and spiritual
text is celebrated, plundered, rewritten, deconstructed and transformed
by writers in both Christian and non-Christian cultures.
Facilitated by Dr. Noel Chevalier
Noel is an Assistant Professor of English at Luther College, University
of Regina. He has published and presented work on Biblically-influenced
poets William Blake and Christopher Smart, and also teaches a course on
English Literature and the Bible.
