Mary, Our Advent Model

Thursday, December 8 (9:30-11:30 a.m.)
Focus: Advent is the Church’s period of preparing us to celebrate the coming of Christ, not only at Bethlehem, but more importantly for his final coming in glory which the incarnation inaugurated. Surely we can find not better model than Mary, his mother and ours, to help us prepare properly for Christ’s coming, whether it be his first, or his daily coming into our lives, or his glorious coming. Throughout the various gospels we meet Mary at least ten times. We can’t look at all these in detail. Instead, we’ll emphasize the Lukan scenes of the annunciation, visitation and presentation (Luke 1:26-56 and 2: 21-40) and the Johannine scenes at Cana and the crucifixion. (John 2:1-11 and 19: 25b-30). We encourage you to prayerfully look over these passages prior to our December 8th workshop.

Facilitator – Vince Morrison
Vince has presented scriptural workshops at the John Paul II Centre, in parishes and for the Lay Ministries Formation Program. He has four years of theology and has taught biblical literature for the extension departments of the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Regina.

Cost: $15
Seniors - $12 (60 yrs)

In the Spirit of Taize: An Advent Twilight Retreat
Sunday, December 18 (4:00-9:00 p.m.).
Focus: During this season of gift-giving, will you have the most important gift of all ready for the Christ Child? [Your heart?]
On this last Sunday before Christmas, come aside from the busy-ness of preparation and last minute rush, and rest awhile in Sabbath peace. Enjoy time for quiet reflection and prayer before and after a tasty supper in a prayerful atmosphere of quiet. Experience the ecumenical community of men in Taize, France (video) who live together in the spirit of peace that Jesus came to bring, share Brother Roger’s* open letter of a future of peace, and experience in a candlelight service the beauty and simplicity of their prayer and chants – for peace and reconciliation on earth among all faiths and all nations. *Founder of Taize

Facilitators – Sr Joyce Lorentz SSND, Carol and Bruce Sheldon
Sr. Joyce Lorentz is a School Sister of Notre Dame (SSND) and is a member of Holy Child Parish. She has been leading the Taize prayer for the past four years at the John Paul II Centre.

Carol and Bruce Sheldon are Associate members of SSND and are very active in their parish of St. Cecilia’s. They are married and have 3 children and 2 grandchildren. Along with Sr. Joyce, the Sheldons have been leading Taize prayer at the John Paul II Centre as well as in various other assemblies.
