Conflict Between Science and Religion

Wednesday, April 27 (7:00 - 9:00 p.m.)

There has been a good deal of conflict between science and religion in recent years, but is this necessary or inevitable? Using the controversies over Galileo and Darwin as case studies, this session will argue that it is not.

After tracing the origin of the “war between science and religion” metaphor to 19th century anti-Catholic rhetoric, the session will examine some alternative ways of thinking about the relationship between science and religion.

Facilitated by Dr. William Stahl

Dr. Stahl is Professor of Sociology at Luther College, University of Regina. He is also author of God and the Chip: Religion and the Culture of Technology and co-author of Webs of Reality: Social Perspectives on Science and Religion.
